Nothing tugs more at our heartstrings than the tiny little newborns we photograph. There is nothing more magical than the birth of a child. Capturing and preserving the tender innocence of your brand new baby is a privilege.
I understand that new parents have many needs and are very busy, especially in those first few days after the birth of a baby. However, one highly recommended event is to get your newborn in for a newborn photography session. I don’t need to tell you how fast children grow from infant to toddler, and then before you know it your child will be getting on the school bus. The moments click by almost as fast as the shutter on our cameras.

Posing and Your Newborn Session
Posing is one of the most critical aspects of newborn photography. Posing an infant requires extra care and handling. I know that your baby’s neck and body are not fully developed and I have a lot of experience in handling newborn babies. Your precious baby’s comfort and security are first and foremost, so I will be very patient and dedicate enough time to capture images based on your baby’s mood. We take every precaution to ensure a very comfortable setting, both for the parents and newborn.
With twins or multiple newborns, we take many of the same measures with the exception of adding more time to the session. It can be challenging enough to get one baby to cooperate, and with two it does require extra posing and handling. It helps if you have an extra set of hands to accompany you at the photo shoot when multiple babies are present.
5 Tips for Your Newborn Session
1. Please wait to feed your baby until you arrive at my studio, so that he/she might be more likely to fall asleep after nursing. (This time is also planned as part of your session, so there is no need to show up early.)
2. Have a pacifier or nubby for your little one to suck on.
3. Many of the images we take are “au natural” but we do not want your baby to be cold, so have a favorite soft blanket on stand by. The studio lighting also feels warm and will not harm your little one in any way. Please note baby will be in his/her diaper the entire time except with one pose where we will be completely naked.
4. If you have any favorite outfits, such as an NFL team jersey, Army gear, hunting accessories, First Responder attire, etc., please have these special items with you. Please avoid outfits, or any onsies with wording on it, we won’t be able to read it, and with baby moving, it will be quite difficult to get him/her in a comfortable pose to read any wording. However, I do have many wraps and props.
5. For parents, just dress comfortably. You do not have to dress up. You can wear a blouse or a nice top if you wish to have any pictures with baby. We can shoot the images from the waist up. We plan 2 hours, but most of this time is utilized to get baby to that deep sleep.
The Process: How We Work with You and Your Baby
I begin working with you even before your little one arrives. Although babies are unpredictable and not always born on the exact due date as planned, I will still have a general idea so that I can start preparing on my end. I also understand that you may want a few days to rest, so take your time. It is recommended to have the shoot within the first couple of weeks of your baby’s birth, so I can capture those “newborn” faces while they are still so fragile, innocent and beautiful. The most optimal time to schedule your session is during the first 3 weeks after giving birth, because your little one will still be sleepy, tiny and cooperative.
If you would like family photos rather than just individual images of the infant, this is something we can also discuss. There is an option to add Family to your session.
Once your session is scheduled, we’ll talk about your vision for the images. Some parents like to have props, such as little hats, scarves, mittens or special booties and blankets. I also keep props on hand for this special occasion and all items are sanitized in between sessions.
Please be prepared to sign a model release, as I do often use newborn images within my portfolio and will not do so without parental consent. Most parents are more than okay with this, but if for any reason you do not want me to showcase your infant in my collection, please address any concerns you might have in advance.
